Yesterday we took a bus that followed the edge of Lago di Como south to the city of Como, where we managed to get ourselves onto the correct train to Milan.
As soon as we arrived, we bought subway passes and found ourselves a hotel room. We were going to stay in a hostel, but we somehow managed to bargan our way into a brand new 3 star hotel that doesn't seem to be really open yet. It is a beautiful room, with colored LEDs in the shower, but the lobby is still under construction.
We grabbed a late dinner, got a little lost amongst the narrow, winding city streets, then continued our evening by wandering the grounds of Saint Ambrogio church, which is about 1,612 years old. It was late when the padre himself very kindly escorted us out through the gates so he could lock up.
After that, we once again rode the subway, but this time to the Duomo, which is a stunning example of the Gothic style built out of white marble and covered in hundreds of spires and thousands of statues. Inside we caught the end of an evening mass, during which the choir filled the soaring space with their voices.
We decided that we would come back during the day for a proper guided tour, and we walked across the plaza to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The architect of this 200 or so year old mall fell from some scafolding to his death before the structure was completed, and it is said that if you grind your heel into the testicles of an image of a bull in the floor of the mall, you will be guaranteed to not meet the same fate. After insuring that we will never fall to our deaths, we bought some gellato, sat on the steps of the Duomo, and got some good people watching in.
Tomorrow we intend to visit a castle, wander some parks, and return to the Duomo.
yay! you're doin it! miss you, though.
