We loved Venice so much we decided to stay another day. The sense of wonder about this place just doesn't wear off. Everyday we explored something different, and there is still so much to see.
The highlight for me (Steve) was the Palazzo Ducale, the residence and administrative offices of the Doge (King/Prime Minister) of Venice, as well as the chambers for various judicial and legislative bodies. It was a well-oiled political machine for centuries, then suddenly abandoned a couple of hundred years ago. It remains perfectly preserved, a stunning display of the riches of this once great Venetian Empire. The walls and ceilings of these massive rooms are literally covered in huge Renaissance Masterpieces, framed with intricately carved, gilded woodwork. Kristen's favorite destination was the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the Grand Canal. Ms. Guggenheim lived in this white marble house for decades, and kept her favorite pieces with her. Some of these masterpieces of Picasso, Ernst, and Duchamp are still hung in the original locations selected by Ms. Guggenheim herself. The collection is not huge, but every piece is a stunner.
We continue to have gelato every night, and have no plans to stop! Venetian food has been a pleasant surprise, lots of clams and mussels. We've been reading reviews of restaurants before heading out, and it has (mostly) paid off. When locals know the chef's name, you know the meal will be good.
Now that we have learned the mystery of walking around this maze of a city (forget the map, follow the strategically placed signs), it is time to go. Venice, we will return! On to Florence.
